Nothing is more challenging than trying to manage and supervise employees. This is especially true in business, legal and political environments that have recently been dynamic and, at times, unpredictable for employers. The multitude of laws and regulations that affect the workplace are oftentimes confusing and difficult to apply correctly. Additionally, the handbook is designed to prevent lawsuits by explaining supervisors’ rights and responsibilities under state and federal law and answering a variety of questions related to employee issues. The handbook was co-authored by O’Neil Cannon Hollman DeJong & Laing, S.C. and Keefe, Campbell & Associates, LLC. Illinois Guide to Hiring and Firing

People are the number one reason that companies and managers succeed or fail! For businesses, the frightening fact is that employees win 71% of all employee related claims. The average jury verdict in wrongful discharge cases now exceeds $500,000!

Our new compliance publication is designed to help employers address these concerns. The guide was written to help employers better develop a blueprint for effectively managing their hiring and firing process to help reduce hiring mistakes and turnover that are critical to an employer’s bottom line.  (178 pages)

Never underestimate the importance of proper exempt/nonexempt employee classification and pay.  Companies are regularly forced to back-pay misclassified and underpaid employees.  Multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements for unpaid overtime and hours worked "off the clock" have been splashed across the front page in recent years, and as wage and hour laws have become more familiar to the general public (and plaintiff's bar in particular), claims under the Fair Labor Standards Act and Illinois state wage and hour laws have become a fast growing area of employment litigation.

There are so many wage and hour issues that businesses must stay compliant in, it can be overwhelming at times.  The Illinois Employer's Guide to Wage & Hour Issues makes it simple!  Topics included in this great reference tool are:

  • Meal Periods & Breaks
  • Travel Time
  • Wage Assignments and Other Deductions
  • Vacation Pay
  • Calculating Overtime Recordkeeping and Posting Requirements
  • Child Labor Laws
  • Wage/Hour Obligations of Government Contractors
  • WARN Act
  • Equal Pay Issues
  • Exempt vs. Non-exempt Classifications
And there's much more to this comprehensive, easy-to-understand manual!

To help employers address the issues and the high costs associated with not being compliant with the law, the Illinois Chamber engaged the prestigious law firm of Seyfarth Shaw to author the newest HR Illinois compliance publication - the Illinois Employer's Guide to Wage & Hour Issues.  This new publication was written to provide an overview of wage and hour laws applicable to Illinois employers.

HR ALERT!

MANDATORY EMPLOYMENT POSTINGS:

On October 23, 2009, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) released a new "EEO is the Law" poster which includes information on the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA).

The poster is being updated to include information about GINA, specifically that employers are prohibited from discriminating against applicants and employees on the basis of genetic information or genetic testing. Our Mandatory Employment Posters are being revised to meet compulsory federal guidelines and we are now taking orders.

All covered employers are required to post this new poster with other required posters. Covered employers are all private employers with 15 or more employees and public sector employers.

What Is it!

State and federal law require your company to post up-to-date employee posters. The Illinois Chamber offers a set of two 23-by-30-inch laminated posters that include ALL federal and Illinois manadatory postings, including the following:

  • NEW FMLA posting
  • NEW federal EEO posting (federal)
  •  NEW USERRA posting
  • Smoke-Free Illinois notice
  • NEW Illinois Workplace Safety and Health posting
  • Federal OSHA notice
  • Federal Polygraph Protection Act posting
  • Unemployment Insurance notice (Illinois)
  • Worker's Compensation notice (Illinois)
  • Federal Fair Labor Standards Act (minimum wage) posting
  • Illinois Department of Labor "omnibus" posting: this contains the Illinois Minimum wage posting, equal pay notice,
  • Victims' Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA) posting
  • One Day Rest in Seven Act notice and Illinois child labor information.

Who should order a poster set?

  •  Human resource professionals
  •  Office managers
  • Personnel managers
  • Business owners
  • Supervisors
  • Anyone interested in being in compliance!

Why should I buy a poster set?

Posting requirements are constantly changing and it's the employer's responsibilty to remain informed of these changes and update postings accordingly. If you are not in compliance, it could cost your company thousands of dollars in violation fees. Fines run as high as $17,000! Plus, you could weaken your legal standing in a potential lawsuit because failure to display certain postings could extend the time employees have to file suit against you.
